The village

The advantage of Second Life is being able to change the learning environment to suit the learners. The first years have got into building little homes, so I've set them the task of creating a village. A quick bit of region texture tweaking and terraforming, and look of the land now suits the task.

10am - 5pm. "Build one of the following type of trees:" task. All pilot students, plus a couple of level 3 students, worked on this project as an activity as part of the Big Draw event, which also took place real life in Leeds Met Library.

Top level 3 student builds a 'Symbol tree'. The black pixel version led me to reminisce about my first computer, a 1K ZX81.

20080710 Actions from Phase 1 review f2f meeting

Submitted by whited on Wed, 07/23/2008 - 10:51.

Firstly thanks to everyone who made it to the meeting
yesterday. I spent so much time ‘releasing control’ that it didn’t dawn on me
just how much we achieved. See: http://www.flickr.com/photos/7961104@N06/2657778855/sizes/l/
for a reminder.

I hope we have the core of what will grow into our major
‘key findings and recommendations’ report towards the end of the project. I
also hope that the principles that we drafted will be a useful list to throw
out to the community for comment.

Below are my notes from the day.

  1. DW to transcribe the
white boards but not the post-it notes and send to MPG and SW in the first
    instance
  2. MPG and SW to ‘Cluster’
the principles in a diagram of some sort (I vote for node and spoke) and
    circulate to the team.
  3. DW to identify who needs
to write up the new stories which emerged.
  4. DW to send round agreed
email questions to the philosophy students.
  5. DW to remove the word
‘pedagogy’ from the final pilot reports.
  6. DW to liaise with City
University to set-up a f2f event in December.
  7. IT to share the details
of what the students achieved with MPG (You may have finished this?)
  8. MPG to complete the
    evaluation of phase one.
  9. IT and GH to draft an
initial plan for phase two taking into account the evaluation of phase one
and the principles that came out of yesterday
  10. DW to draft a phase 2
philo pilot plan when the evaluation is complete
  11. IT to send DW the draft
structure for the final pilot reports
  12. Everyone to send DW up
    to date project working times.
  13. IT and GH to consider
the format of a similar story telling workshop with students or SL
    educators in Leeds.

These are the action points. The deadline for 1. 2. writing
up 3. 6. and 12. is the end of July so that I have some good material to ref in
the next report to JISC in early August. It would also be good to have the
official final version of the A+D pilot eval and a draft of the Philo one.
