20080318 Actions Arising from the meeting on 200803012

Submitted by whited on Tue, 03/18/2008 - 15:01.

Actions arising from ‘Pilots Design Meeting’ @ KCL
2008-03-12

General Points on Communication and Website:

  • The first cross project meeting with the Preview and Planet project has been
changed from 24th June to the 4th of July.
  • DW to meet Marianne Talbot about Philosophy Pilot Design on 20th
    March
  • The DataStore section of the site should become the hub for project
    documentation.
  • SW metioned changing the name of the project to ‘Open Habitat’ in the logo to
go with the website and to get across our use of open source software.
  • We will use OpenHabitat as the main tag on everything we upload to the
    web.
  • We will continue to use Google Docs when we have a complex doc to write and
then paste it across to the DataStore area or link to it as a public
    document.
  • Create a Flickr pool for the Habitat to keep images together although we will
still feed from individual Flickr accounts onto the site SW
  • Link screenshots from the students to this Flickr poll via the Leeds ePortfolio tool (with the students
permission). The idea here being to gather a pool of screenshots in one
place in Flickr but to keep the overall eportfolio tool private (GH
    to investigate)
  • Probably use the students SL names throughout

Examples of good practice report (Deadline 11th April):

This will be constructed as a series of narratives that feed
into a taxonomy of points relating to good practice. We haven’t seen anything
like this yet so it could be a big win for the project. It will also give a
rational and a foundation to our design decisions for the pilot.

The report writing will work as follows:

SW, DC, IT and DW will each write a short (maybe one page)
narrative of an example of good practice. I suggest the following:

  • DW: WoW / SL first 90 mins experiments
& The results of the Eduserv
funded ‘Learning from Virtual Worlds’ project
  • DC: A Living Archives & ?
  • IT: The pedagogical practice of his art and design course (Master, Apprentice model) &
Previous SL activity on the course (virtual studio concept)
  • SW: His SL Workshops & Global Kids / SLED list (?)

SW - MPG Will
create a first version of the taxonomy as a Google doc. http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=dc52xz7n_103xjvsxdb&invite=fw847kw

The idea being that we write these narratives and add to the
taxonomy as we describe significant aspects of practice. These don’t have to be all ‘in world’ aspects
of practice. In fact I think it’s important that Ian describes what good Art
and Design practice is in general so that we have a frame of reference as we go
in world.

Things that are likely to be in the taxonomy include:

  • Blended and distance issues
  • Issues around identity and ethics
  • General issues of student management
  • Which tools to use when
  • Which skills are needed at what point + what it’s fair to expect from students
  • SL specific issues
  • How to assess / reflect on work
  • General tech issues or teaching with technology issues

Etc

This may be a bit sprawling at first and we may have to
split the taxonomy up into different areas as it progresses.

In addition to this GH
will compile a list of relevant tools (in and out of world) that could be
used in the pilots.

Pilot Design Report (Deadline:
end of April)
:

This will follow on from the report above and will be a
formalised version of Ian blog posts taking into account what we have learnt by
constructing the taxonomy. Plus I will describe the design of the philosophy
pilots (which will be quite a simple design)

Again this doesn’t have to be a very long report and will
probably be an extended version of IT and SWs template of the Art and design
pilot. (http://docs.google.com/Doc?docid=ddnqhb8f_1f2dpxjft&hl=en_GB\)

GH to include a diagram and explanation of the use of software
for running and capturing the pilot (ie, chat log tool, eportfolio tool, screen
capture method etc)

IT to start this
report with input from DW, SW, DC, GH.

Art and Design Pilot:

IT to look into
pre-registering students and liaise with DW
about the financial implications

  • Get choice of names
  • Teleport to Habitat island
  • Upload some lindens to accounts
  • Students can still bring in their own avatars if they want

Capturing the pilot for evaluation:

Pre and post pilot questionnaire to be circulated by DW for comment.

Before Pilot:

  • Pre-questionnaire
circulated just before the first session (must be short)

At three critical points:

  1. AM Tuesday
    6th May First: morning(DW in
    Leeds
    )
  2. AM Wednesday 7th May: First SL morning (DW in Leeds)
  3. AM Monday the 12th May: Hopefully building (SW
    or MPG in Leeds
    )

Using:

  • Fixed camera at back of room to capture RL
teaching (DW has hard drive camera that could be good for this)
  • Roving mic and interviewer (DW has a Sony
digital voice recorder which could work)
  • GH in world screen capture
  • GH to set-up the chat log tool

Across the duration of the pilot:

  • Get students to upload snapshots into the eportfolio tool
  • Habitat team blog the pilot

Late in the pilot – 20th May (DW in
Leeds
)

  • Focus-group
  • Interviewing mIan and Graham
  • Post-questionnaire

IT To update his
pilot plan with these points.

Other action points from the meeting:

  • SW to give date for Workshop. 2nd week in June.
  • DW to mail round abstract from ALT-C etc
  • DW to give IT postcard for JISC conf.
  • DW to ask Daine and Andy about Eduserv day + offer to pay for Daniel to come. Or convine
the advisory panel at Diane’s dissemination event in May?
