The village

The advantage of Second Life is being able to change the learning environment to suit the learners. The first years have got into building little homes, so I've set them the task of creating a village. A quick bit of region texture tweaking and terraforming, and look of the land now suits the task.

The task for the rest of this week is to build a village.

10am - 5pm. "Build one of the following type of trees:" task. All pilot students, plus a couple of level 3 students, worked on this project as an activity as part of the Big Draw event, which also took place real life in Leeds Met Library.

Manatee's Symbol tree

Top level 3 student builds a 'Symbol tree'. The black pixel version led me to reminisce about my first computer, a 1K ZX81.

With VM

Here, are instructions for using virtualbox or vmware running a debian VM (using a bridged connection) with OpenSIM installed. Currently, Virtualbox beta 3 for OS X does not support bridging connections but does claim that it's planned, and Vmware does not have a free solution for running a VM on OS X.

Current options for an OpenSIM VM on OS X:
Parallels (pay) - supports bridging
VMware Fusion (pay) - supports bridging
Future options for OS X:
Virtualbox (GPL) - does not yet support bridging

Notes on Virtualbox:

  • GNU General Public License (GPL)
  • Can run on Windows, Linux and Mac (although bridging is not yet possible for OS X)
  • Pre-configured Images can be created

Notes on VMWare:

  • VMware is closed source software
  • The free VMplayer can only run on Linux and Windows, VMfusion (pay) is required for Mac but does support bridging
  • It is not possible to easily create your own images using the free VMplayer
